'I wanted to capture some of the impacts of climate change in a region of Canada which has experienced some of the highest warming rates on the planet – Yukon, Northwest Territories, and the Rockies in Alberta. I was lucky enough to be able to join scientists, as they made routine visits to some of their observation stations and study sites. ' Gennadiy Ivanov, 2019

About Gennadiy Ivanov
Gennady’s works is a wide variety of media, including paintings, installations, drawings, and photography. Bringing these media together into a provocative collision, Gennady’s work mine a territory defined by not only the specters of recent world political history but also the deeply flowing social veins of underground style as manifested in the popular culture realms of street art fashion and experimental dance and music.
Gennady’s works walk a tightrope between West-East remembrance and the rigorous anti-logic of dream analysis while also touching on art historical references ranging from Van Gogh to Frances Bacon.
It might be possible to trace Gennady’s focus on the vagaries of memory, history and subcultural style to his parallel life as a poet, fiction writer, and historian. His curatorial projects 2014-2018 evidenced a refined display of the artists multitasking painterly practice as well as his oneiric* Historical analytic. The artist brought into proximity a series of canvases that ranged from quasi-psychedelic non-representational liquid (oily) pours to expressively figurative large-scale canvases. The artworks painterly invocations of phyla-political analysis of the history of the 20-21st century globalist’s masculinity. To his credit, he creates a level of narrative ambiguity in these works that is suggestive without being dogmatic.
Gennady combines formal elegance with innovation, and as many modes of representation, from sketchy to smooth and realistic. This simultaneous application of different style and the use photographic imagery as a starting point continues to under grid his practice. A number of large-scale paintings based on images from the scenes of urban life. Inserting multiple layers of experience between him-self and the object (and hence the viewer and the work) underscores the intermediate status of the images and extends the journey of that image as it travels toward its final, painted ‘destination’. The combination of distorted and blurred effects with more precisely rendered passages in a given painting acts as something of a metaphor for the ways in which people experience ‘real’ events, focusing on certain details while perhaps only peripherally glimpsing others, and how those moments are shaped by their means of delivery. His works addressed the acts of looking and seeing, and considers the way in which painting can stake a claim for itself amid the proliferation of contemporary visual formats. Elements from public activities such a walking, literature, music, history, mythology, philosophy and travel appear in this work as a way to make their elements accessible to a broad audience. His paintings more between the territories of dominate culture, popular, culture and subcultures. He is interested in how people define themselves, and in how identity is constructed and manifested publicly.
Gennady’s pictures often feature models and actresses posing seductively, painted over seemingly incongruous backgrounds that recall the willful distortion of figure- ground relation of David Salle or the nebulous layering found in Francis Picabia’s works.
*oneiric- relating to dreams or dreaming. Oneirolody- In the field of psychology, the subfield of oneirology is the scientific study of dreams. Oneiric is an adjective that describes things related to dreams. At the end of "The Wizard of Oz," you are left to decide if Dorothy really travelled to Oz or if she was simply in an oneiric state, dreaming up the whole adventure.
Oneiric comes from the Greek word oneiros, meaning a dream. In Greek mythology, the Oneiroi, or Dreams, were the brothers (or sons, depending on the author) of Hypnos, or Sleep. Homer, Ovid, and Euripides all wrote about them — Homer in both the "Odyssey" and the "Iliad." The adjective oneiric is often used in film theory to describe the dream-like elements of a movie.

2023 UEA Innovation and Impact AwardsPartnership of the Year
A climate mural for our times: global science, local expression Dr Michael Taylor and Prof Trevor Davies (School of Environmental Sciences) A powerful combination of scientific and artistic creativity, involving continuous dialogue between scientists, artist and civic leader over two years. The soul of the mural was created from innovative analysis and visualisation of climate data. Prof Davies’s suggestion of a painting for City Hall, featuring the work of CRU, was enthusiastically welcomed by Alan Waters (then leader of Norwich City Council). A mural was commissioned for the Council Chamber to constantly remind decision-makers to address climate change. It is also the focus of continuing community projects and a rallying call for other local authorities. Although artist Gennadiy Ivanov’s mind would motivate his brushstrokes,it was agreed that interpretation would be based on – and depict – the very latest science. The keystone of the mural is its skyline; the temperature record from 65 million years ago through two possible scenarios for the next 200 years. The cataclysm of the Chicxulub asteroid is the starting point because of the relevance of the resulting mass extinction of species and the next 200 years may see temperatures climb towards the highs of this geological period. This presented huge scientific challenges. The resolution/range of temperature reconstructions vary enormously over time. Information for periods of societal experience and future needed to be represented in detail. One of the six mural panels would span 62 million years and >10oC; another only centuries and 1oC, yet still enough to have enormous impacts on human societies. Dr Taylor sourced temperature reconstructions for each panel, including the CRU instrumental record for the 1850-present panel, compiled/combined them, and iterated with Ivanov to represent them as coloured stripes but with novel choices of gradations to account for disparate resolutions/ranges. Ivanov used these to remarkable effect in his skyline above the Norfolk coastline. This crucial information makes the mural a powerful messenger for the impact of climate change and pinpoints the now-or-never moment for action. |
