On the 50th anniversary year of UEA’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU), the stark impact of climate change both locally and worldwide has been brought into a unique focus by a giant mural now on display in Norwich City Council’s council chamber. The mural, entitled ‘Climate Mural for our Times’, is a 10m x 1.5m piece that includes a record of global temperature over time (66 million BC through to the end of the next century) represented by the hues of the sky, and informed by CRU’s ‘state-of-the-art’ climate science.
Produced by Norwich-based artist Gennadiy Ivanov, the mural also features renderings of the impacts of climate change on the local landscape and its human inhabitants. It is believed that this is the first time that art and leading-edge science have been combined to give such a vivid portrayal of the challenges posed by climate change and its impacts in the past, the present, and the future.
The artwork has been showcased on the same month that world leaders convened at the COP27 conference to deliver action on climate emergency issues and the annual update from the Global Carbon Budget research team, which included researchers from UEA, that revealed there is now a 50% chance that global warming of 1.5°C will be exceeded in nine years.
The mural and accompanying paintings are the outcome of a collaboration between Norwich City Council, CRU, the Transitions Art-Science Project, and Global Water Futures, an international research programme whose headquarters are based at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.

A Climate Mural for Our Times. 25.11.2022
A Climate Mural for Our Times opened at the City Hall Norwich on 25 November 2022, in the 50th Anniversary Year of the Founding of the Climatic Research Unit, University of East Anglia, Norwich. An art-science collaboration between Gennadiy Ivanov, Norwich City Council, the Climatic Research Unit UEA, the Transitions Art-Science Project, and Global Water Futures. Art and science to help inform decisions about all our futures.
Huge climate change mural installed in Norwich City Hall, EDP24, Norwich 27.11.2022
And, when they make key decisions, Norwich city councillors will have a stark reminder of the impact their actions could have - because the Climate Mural For Our Times has been installed in City Hall's council chamber. The artwork was commissioned by Norwich City Council and produced by a city artist working with the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU), which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The 10-metre-long mural shows how global temperatures have changed over the past 66 million years - and the impacts on the Norwich and Norfolk area, including the coastline. The work, gifted to the council by artist Gennadiy Ivanov, is believed to be the first substantial piece of public climate change artwork commissioned by local government.Mr Ivanov, who has a gallery in Upper St Giles Street and a studio in Anglia Square, said: "It was a long project – almost four years in total – and very hard work. But it is amongst the most fascinating things I have ever done."I am privileged to have worked so closely with scientists, using the finest climate research. "I feel very proud and humbled that my work will be mounted in the very fine Norwich City Hall. "I hope the mural helps people understand what has happened, is happening and may happen, and that it contributes to us all choosing a better future."The mural's six panels take in the extinction of dinosaurs, ice ages, the founding of Norwich, burning of fossil fuels, the growth of climate science, and what the future could hold. The hues of the sky represent global temperature over time, informed by the work of climate scientists at CRU.Alan Waters, leader of Norwich City Council, said: "The city council is hugely proud to host this climate mural."Norwich has always been at the forefront of understanding and tackling the threat of a warming climate and by placing this impressive, evocative artwork in the centre of City Hall, in our council chamber, we have an ever-present reminder to take the urgent actions required."Prof Tim Osborn, the CRU's director, said it had been a "rich" collaboration between UEA climate science, art, and local decision-makers.By Dan Grimmer dangrimmer24 Public affairs correspondent

This is, of course, a symbolic image. It's more of a warning than a reality. We read every sign. Some desolation- desolation says more than pretentious workload.
My thoughts about this work and plans were to convey the following: A bombed and bleeding piano, an oil and gas rig on the horizon. The F16 flew east. The old ruined Pier on which danger is written, Do not approach, as a symbol of a cheerful happy life in the past (this is a real pier in Great Yarmouth that I photographed by the sea with the inscription-I decided to leave the inscription) . Well, the storm begins. The storm is a symbol of war and change. The color of the sky changes from blue to red.

Margarita's Portrait NHS nurse frontline hero. Oil on canvas, 80x60 cm.
I moved to the UK from Lithuania when I was young. I experienced a lot of obstacles but I found I had a passion to help people. I worked hard, obtained a university place and became a nurse in the National Health Service.
After four stressful years of being a student, my nursing journey began in the midst of a global pandemic. I have cared for many people who had been diagnosed with COVID-19 also known as ‘The Coronavirus’. Whilst many services in the UK were shut down my fellow healthcare workers and I, had no other choice but to work. Fast forward a year and we are all exhausted, these times are challenging.
The pandemic has taken a massive toll on myself and my fellow colleagues who work in the NHS. Demands and expectations are continuously increasing in all of our workloads. We do our best we try to push our emotions aside whilst we care for the vulnerable, however many of us do not feel valued. The government turn their backs on us at the time of need by increasing our workload and not giving us an adequate pay rise. On top of this some patients expect so much but how can I or my colleagues meet these expectations when there is simply not enough staff?
Many nurses leave because they can’t handle the pressure and because the pay does not reflect their expertise, their knowledge and the responsibilities they have. This is a worry because people are living longer and there is a greater need for healthcare. Nurses ARE the hospital, without nurses there would be no hospitals, but no one is talking about this.
I feel that nursing is a beautiful profession, it also almost heals you because you have the opportunity to make a difference for someone. You get to hold a person’s hand through the challenging times, you provide reassurance for those who have worries, you comfort those who are at the end of their life, you provide reassurance for the loved ones and you always do your best. No day is the same, sometimes it gets tough. I come back home after an exhausting day and I can’t help but think about the difficult situations that I encounter. Many of my colleagues go through this too. We have to be strong for our patients but we are also human too. It is a relief to be able to talk about the difficulties that we face in our jobs with our loved ones and that is how we are able to carry on. I feel like that itself makes it ever so valuable, at least for me.

TIME TO PROTECT -oil on canvas, 92x65 cm
Times have changed dramatically and radically. The time that we got for living is no longer configured to endure half-tones and understatements. It requires us to express everything to the end. The whole "creed", to the last letter. It requires us to be in the most decisive sense. Human or inhuman.
And right now on our eyes, people are making choices. Often - unexpected. Many intelligent people in suits with prestigious diplomas suddenly fall down on all fours and begin to grunt, looking for a weaker victim with bloodshot eyes.

TIME FOR THE QUESTIONS -oil on canvas, 92x65 cm
TIME FOR THE QUESTIONS , new self isolation self portrait for the Timelessness project, 92x65 cm.
The Allegory of the questions:
'TO BE, OR NOT TO BE? That is the question': William Shakespeare book, The Crystal globe, the Painting of destroyed The Tower of Babel, The man with Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Othello mask, Hand on the Scull (The death powered man), and The Eye of Horus, also known as wadjet, wedjat or udjat, is an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection, royal power, and good health.
‘The eye of Horus is the eye of Heaven, Shakespeare’s ‘Heavens’ eye, but it’s when it gets identified with Ra that the complication comes in. The sacred eye is the eye of heaven, or Ra. Poets, ancient and modern, have sung of it, from the time of Job to the days of Shakespeare. But there was also the evil eye, the one we hear so much about in Southern Italy’. (‘There was a King in Egypt’, Norma Lorimer)
We celebrate the 456th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth:
'...Stand here in England 450 years ago, though, and you would have looked down onto a village ravaged by the Great Plague. You would have seen empty streets, the doors daubed with white crosses, and heard the wails of the dying from behind closed doors.
The plague reached Eyam in the summer of 1665 when a London merchant sent flea-infested cloth samples to the local tailor, Alexander Hadfield. Within a week, Hadfield’s assistant, George Vickers, had died a prolonged and agonising death. Before long, the rest of the household had fallen ill and died.Until now, the plague had been mostly contained to the south of England. Terrified the disease would spread across the north, wiping out other towns and communities, the villagers realised there was only one option: quarantine. With the guidance of their rector William Mompesson, they decided to isolate themselves, creating a perimeter of boundary stones that they vowed not to cross … even those who were not showing any symptoms.'

TIME TO CHANGE THE HAT - oil on canvas, 92x73 cm
New painting "TIME TO CHANGE THE HAT" for the Timelessness self isolation self portrait project.
This is an allegory on the subject of “Spy Games, New / Old Games”.
• A box with caps is a change of appearance, a change of country - spy passion for Covid-19.
Today, we are on the verge of a new war — the war against humanity, already based on the virus.
This war has already affected the economies of many developed and developing countries in the world, and it seems that there is no end to it. The London GIN Box is a symbol of a rich, well-fed and economically poisoned economy.
• The number of "12" bottles on the box symbolizes:
12-NUMBER OF ORDER AND GOOD. In Judaic and ancient Eastern culture, the number 12 corresponded to the abundance, completeness, and integrity of the existing. ANCIENT PEOPLES ADAPTED ITS HISTORY TO THIS NUMBER. EXCEPT 12 ZODIAC SIGNS FAMOUS 12 GREAT GODS OF ANTIQUE MYTHOLOGY, 12 CHRISTIAN PERSONS, 12 FRANCE PERSONS, 12 HOLY GRAL KNIGHTS, 12 MONTHS PER YEAR, 12 ANGELS IN THE BIBLE, 12 COLORS OF THE COLOR OF THE BIRTH OF COLORS.
• Golden Amulet - as a symbol of the Golden Eye of the Dragon with a crown (The Serpent eye with Corona) in the form of an opium poppy fruit. The symbol of the Opium War with China is the control of the world's population through drugs and alcohol. In the Golden Poppy, the intoxicated eye of the Golden Dragon. Gold is a symbol of China - an important element in the life and culture of the Chinese. No one really knows the amount of gold that goes in China. China refused to pay gold and silver for opium, and for this it was practically brought to its knees and destroyed in two opium wars.
Books: Did Autor Dean Koonz really predict the deadly virus 40 years ago in 1981, wrought the science fiction books novel ‘The Eyes of Darkness’, ‘Wuhan-400’?
• Number “12” in China: CHINESE HAVE A TWELVE DECAL SYSTEM OF DIFFERENCE: 12 IMPERIAL SIGNS OF DIFFERENCE, 12 OFFICIAL POSTS CREATED BY MYTHIC EMPIOR SUN. MEDICINE COUNTS 12 INTERNAL BODIES, MUSIC-12 TONES. 12-NUMBER OF PHILOSOPHICAL STONE.
Almost 200 years ago, the first Opium War broke out between Britain and China. The first opium war of 1840-1842 was fought between Britain and the Qing Empire. A prerequisite for the war was a distortion of the trade balance between these countries in favor of China, the cause of which was the Chinese policy of protecting the empire from foreign influence. Opium was a commodity that was in demand in China and could balance the trade balance, bringing huge profits to the British, but its sale was prohibited by imperial decrees.
Here we see an unremitting attempt to influence China and its limitless market today, of its control for the sake of enrichment.
• Matches as a symbol of fomenting war.
• The skull is a symbol of control of life and death.
• British Souvenirs as a symbols of the British Empire: the letter box, a police box and a telephone box - this is a connection with the world, information control over the world.
The Booth of the Policeman and also a symbol of the science fiction series ‘Doctor Who?’ relates us to the opportunity to travel in time, study and observe history, make calls, write from the past / future to the present. Here everyone can tell their own story of the past / future / present to their loved ones, friends or just strangers.
• Box Gordon’s Jean: Last Name Gordon means Big Hill. Surname Gordon has a rather interesting history of origin and refers to the common type of Anglo-Scottish surnames. Gordon’s iconic reputation has been built since its initial conception as a Southwark based distillery in 1769 by Alexander Gordon. The production later moved to Clerkenwell in 1786 and the white spirit sailed the seas through the 1800’s, creating legions of fans the world over. Tanqueray Gordon & Co Limited. Food & Drink. Expertly distilled, the distinctively refreshing taste comes from the finest juniper and blend of botanicals.
In the 18th century, the "Gin Epidemic" took place in Britain, almost costing the population of the kingdom due to total drunkenness and subsequent drunken riots.
Picture in the upper left corner: An ancient caricature showing gin sellers and their customers. These were adults, children and infants.
The atmosphere of London since the Gin Epidemic is impressive.
The classic gin recipe soon began to modernize, and as a result, the gin began to be driven out of any rubbish. Sometimes even chicken droppings and turpentine, which was added to the fortress, went into business. Sometimes the swill turned out to be so disgusting that they refused to drink it even for free. Then a little sugar was added to it and the consumer was immediately there.
Since then, it is believed that sweet gin is a poor-quality product and an Englishman who respects himself and drinking companions will not put such a drink on the table. People died from surrogate alcohol, went crazy and went on the most terrible crimes. Shame and a sense of self-preservation were lost - drunkards laid clothes in taverns and froze in thousands in London alleys. About the same thing happened in other big cities of the kingdom and in some small ones. Seen residents of London was shocked by the act of a certain Judith Defort. This lady received clothes for her baby in a charity, but she immediately drank it in a tavern, and strangled the baby. She was hastily tried and jerked up on the gallows, next to the townspeople who had lost their human appearance due to alcohol.
What war are we heading for again? As in the past
Gin with turpentine was a symbol of barbarism and poverty, and beer personified the middle class, loyal to the authorities and regularly attending church. So there was no talk of sobriety - again, one drink was replaced with another with a fight, with an eye on someone's interests.

TIME FOR THE R'EVOLUTION-THE APPLE STORY, oil on canvas, 89x116 cm
Humans LOVE to control other humans.
They want THEIR freedom/money . . . and yours too.’ (anonymous)
Thinking of politics: is there any way to find a compromise between Democracy and Totalitarianism?
‘I was thinking about the pros and cons of all the political extremes and stances, i.e., Fascism, Democracy, Socialism, whatever.
Would there be any way to combine the efficiency and security of a single party state, whilst retaining the freedom citizens of democracies enjoy? The closest thing I can think of is a group of scientists, social scientists etc ruling the country irrefutably, but abdicating/submitting to a general election only if the country in question is discontent with the decisions made. This way, surely the most efficient, happiness providing form of government/policies can be found? Power corrupts absolute power corrupts Absolutely. That is a fact of life, benevolent rulers are as thin on the ground as gold coins. Whatever politics they follow. We have just had a perfect lesson from the British government, they are still smarting and actually believe they should be allowed to help themselves to our money That’s from the mildest form of government add a little totalisium and you have what you asked for. In history scientists have been found to be the most untrustworthy humans of all. and in history hundreds have sold their country down the river for profit.’
The History is controlled and manipulated by who and how they want in their interests.
The story of my picture is the story of APPLE from Adam and Eve’s time to the present day.
• An apple is an ancient symbol of life, eternal youth and immortality. Due to its almost perfect spherical shape, it symbolizes integrity, infinity, eternity, reversibility, cyclicity, perfection. If you cut an apple in half, its core will look like a five-pointed star, a sacred pentagram. Perhaps, for this reason, the apple was a symbol of the goddess Aphrodite, associated with Lucifer. The five-pointed star manifests itself manifold in nature.
• Adam's apple
God placed Adam in the Garden to take care of him and warned him not to eat the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, "for the day you eat the fruit, you will die right away." The serpent tempts Eve to eat the fruit of the Tree, but Eve tells the snake what God said (Genesis 3: 3). The serpent replies that she will not die (Genesis 3: 4) and that if she eats the fruit of the tree “then your eyes will be opened and you will know good and evil like gods” (Genesis 3: 5) Eve ate the fruit and gave it to Adam, and he also ate it. God, who was walking in the Garden, found out about this and in order to prevent Adam and Eve from eating the fruits of the Tree of Life and live forever, he expels them from the Garden and sets up an angelic guard. The serpent is punished for its fate in their fall by the fact that from now on it will crawl on its belly in dust.
• Eating an apple by Eve and her husband is symbolically interpreted as their involvement in sexual relations, which before that were unknown to them. The apple appears here as a symbol of knowledge, sin, carnal pleasures. The original sin of Adam, according to the theologians, was atoned for by the crucifixion of the "second Adam" - Jesus Christ.
• Eternal human errors, whims and lusts.
• Strawberries as a symbol.
Strawberries, like many other fruits, have their own myths. In the Roman Empire, for example, strawberries were revered as a symbol of Venus, the goddess of love, for a shape similar to a heart. There was even a legend that if you cut a berry in half and treat it to representatives of the opposite sexes, then eaters will fall in love with each other. In the Middle Ages, strawberries were served on tables as a symbol of peace and prosperity.
• Water is a controversial and multifaceted symbol.
An old kettle for boiling water and a watering can to water flowers - a symbol of hot and cold water, the life-giving force for humans and plants.
Water is a symbol of the feminine.
Water spaces, like the sky, always beckoned with their secret. A man cannot survive without water, but he is also incapable of living in water. Therefore, water symbolizes knowledge, mercy for life and good health.
In the legends you can find several symbolic descriptions of water in its various states:
-when a person manages to cross a turbulent stream, this symbolizes spiritual prosperity;
- calm water surface - a source of life, a symbol of inexorably slipping away time and oblivion.
- pure water quenching thirst is a symbol of purification, renewal and transformation of simple things into something more valuable.
-A legend says that water has always been, is and will always exist. Water is the symbol of the fundamental principle of everything, it is the primary element from which everything was born on Earth. And with the disappearance of water, life will disappear.
• A phone as a symbol of spying and communication with the world.
Transmission of information and how to track changes and the speed of transmission of news and information in modern times.
During the revolution, Lenin ordered his supporters primarily to seize the post office, telegraph and telephone exchange.
That is, the transmission and control of information is a very important component of modern life, and we are convinced of this by having a mobile phone today, which we practically do not part with. Almost no one can imagine their life without a phone and high-speed Internet. But these “smart” creatures have learned to follow us, to eavesdrop and peep - and in most cases people are already used to it and not against it, we don’t even notice what is happening to us.
• Auschwitz bricks - as a symbol of control and destruction. (The Back wall-bricks with the hidden numbers on it is symbol of the punch-cards.)
• Holocaust industry, digital concentration camp, IBM punch cards used in Germany to determine nationality, sexual orientation, location, birth, age.
IBM is an American company, but in the early 30s it already had a branch in Germany. After Adolf Hitler came to power, representation in the country remained, and IBM did not refuse to cooperate with the Nazis. The book, IBM and the Holocaust, describes how high technology of the time contributed to the genocide of the Jewish (and not only Jewish) people. Before the war and the “final solution of the Jewish question”, IBM began supplying the Third Reich with equipment that helped them register Jews in the country and ultimately destroy most of them. Many other companies also collaborated with the Nazis: Standard Oil, General Motors, Ford, General Electric, Coca-Cola - at least 100 American companies were in business contacts with Hitler Germany.
• Without the identification and selection of Jews, it would be impossible to destroy them.
• The machines were so good that they allowed even Jews who had carefully concealed their origin for several generations to be detected by cross-sectional analysis.
• All information, if in doubt, has been double-checked.
• According to the data cited, the racial census revealed in Germany about 600 thousand Jews, including those who “shamelessly” considered themselves to be 100% German, although Jewish blood of grandmothers or great-grandmothers flowed in their veins. “The census revealed the level of penetration of these elements polluting the Aryan race into German culture, trade, industry, law, medicine, and also ... The census revealed Jewish property to be confiscated - houses, shops, factories ...”
• On the same machines they kept records of those destroyed in concentration camps.

-when a person manages to cross a turbulent stream, this symbolizes spiritual prosperity;
• The Germans kept statistics on imprisoned Jews. Even the codes that were used to organize the data are given: Code 8 - Jews, Homosexuals – Code 3, Code 11 - Gypsies, Code 001 - Auschwitz, Code 001 - Buchenwald and so on.

Time for the Da Vinci Code.
Leonardo da Vinci ... from the future.
He was born in 1452 and died in 1519. Leonardo does not seem to be a Florentine, an Italian, or an earthly man at all. This super-genius is so strange that it causes scientists not even amazement, but almost reverence, always mixed with confusion. Even a general overview of its capabilities throws researchers into shock: well, a person cannot, at least seven spans in his forehead (like Leonardo), be a brilliant engineer, artist, sculptor, inventor, mechanic, chemist, philologist, visionary, handsome man, alone one of the best singer, swimmer, creator of musical instruments, cantatas, rider, fencer, architect, fashion designer. His abilities and capabilities were undoubtedly superhuman. In the “Diaries” of Leonardo da Vinci there are sketches of birds in flight, for the implementation of which it was necessary to have materials for slow-motion photo or film shooting! Researchers even suggested that Leonardo’s sense of vision was so keen that it made it possible to see ultra-fast movement — then, of course, he was not a man, because it was not accessible to any of the people. He kept a diary, making pre-written entries for himself in small letters, from left to right, connecting separate words in a sentence in the same way as in a spoken speech, and using cursive elements - abbreviations of letters and syllables! One gets the impression that two personalities seemed to live in da Vinci: one - a very famous, friendly, not without some human weaknesses, and the other - an incredibly strange, secretive, unknown to anyone who commands and commands Leonardo ... Leonardo da Vinci possessed an accurate and versatile vision of the future. Leonardo rightly considered water to be the main and most important element of all living creatures and plants, “the blood of the Earth”, the source of all life - modern science shares his conviction. But he also knew that a man was 90 percent water, although he had absolutely no place to find out. Leonardo da Vinci is the inventor of a spacesuit, a sub ¬ boat, the idea of a steamboat, flippers for both legs and arms. He has a manuscript in which it shows the possibility of immersion to a great depth without a suit - thanks to the use of a special gas mixture (the secret of which he deliberately destroyed); to invent it, you need to be well versed in the biochemical processes of the human body, which, naturally, were completely unknown in his time! In Leonardo’s papers they find a description of even an amphibian man (salamanders). Leonardo is phenomenally unique: there has never been such a creature before or after in the history of mankind. There were brilliant artists, but not an artist and a sculptor at the same time; brilliant artists and sculptors, but not an artist, sculptor and at the same time inventor, engineer, scientist, etc. There were, for example, prominent seers, but not a seer, and at the same time an artist, sculptor, singer, architect, manufacturer of musical instruments - like him alone. Who was he? This is the biggest mystery.
In total, historians counted 120 folders with drawings and engineering calculations by Da Vinci, 13,000 pages of unrealized designs. It is amazing that in the heyday of the Inquisition, and he fell precisely on the years of the artist's life, Leonardo was able to avoid persecution.
It is known that Leonardo Da Vinci was an atheist. He could have been sent to the stake, but they didn’t, because there was an agreement between the artist and the Pope: he does not speak directly about his worldview and helps the church if necessary, and the church does not interfere in the affairs of Leonardo.
The personal life of the artist was the subject of speculation, rumour and speculation. There is some evidence that perhaps Da Vinci was a gay ,or hermaphrodite and depicted his second "I" in portraits of Mona Lisa. Many researchers are inclined to believe that he placed a lot of hidden signs and symbols in the paintings.
Salamander - in alchemy, the spirit of fire as the primary element is the elemental of fire. Often depicted as a small salamander lizard, which, according to legend, could live on fire, since it had a cold body, and it could appear in a fire and crawl out of it, hiding in the brushwood thrown there. It was believed that if you throw it into the fire, it will go out.
The salamanders were identified in the representation of medieval magicians and alchemists with the substance of fire. A characteristic feature of the salamander is the unusual cold of the body, allowing it to be on fire without burning, as well as extinguish any flame. The salamander was a symbol of the red incarnation of the philosopher's stone. It was believed that with the help of a system of mirrors it is possible to “crystallize” the energy of the sun's rays in a glass vessel and thus invoke and subjugate the salamander to its will.
Medieval iconography uses the image of the salamander as a symbol of the righteous - the guardian of faith among the vicissitudes of the mortal world. Putting the salamander on its coat of arms, its owner, in fact, declared that he had inherent stamina, and he was not at all afraid of danger.
There are hermaphrodite salamanders.

The Glaciers Requiem, oil on canvas, 100x80 cm, 2021
I enjoy surreal painting. It helps me express my emotions; something which is important to me. I know that scientists also have emotional responses to what they are seeing and studying. But, in their public statements, they are careful to express themselves in objective terms, based on the rational methods and reporting of science. Because I am an artist, I am allowed to portray myself in a way which expresses some of my feelings.
Here I am below the current snout of the Peyto Glacier, amidst the new and barren landscape revealed by the glacier’s rapid retreat. Modelling by the scientists shows that the glacier could have almost completely vanished by the end of the Century. Although barren, the newly-emerged post-glacial depositional landscape does show tiny specks of green – the first plants are already moving in. They are shown in my glass. Also in my glass is the beige-yellow glacial silt of the depositional landscape, and cryoconite. Cryoconite, the scientists explained to me, is a cocktail of materials which accumulates each year on the glacier’s surface. It consists of ash and soot from vegetation fires, algae, bacteria, viruses, and seeds. It has been growing in abundance over the years, accelerating the glacier’s decline, and is washed-off by the annual melt-water to form dark deposits below the snout. It aids the growth of seedlings and moss. It is an important part of the greening process, driven by the quickly-warming climate. At what point in the future will the blue-white icescape behind me be transformed to green?
I also audio-record the sound of the glacier. The ice-driven katabatic wind; the wind-driven snow particles in late winter; the torrents of meltwater in summer; the splitting and crashing of the collapsing glacier. The record-player is my surreal expression of this. It is also a way, for me, to emphasise the importance of the painstaking recording of scientific data on Peyto the glacier. Observations first started more than 120 years ago, making it the longest-studied glacier in North America, and are continuing with the sophisticated instrumental network of Global Water Futures. In another 120 years there will only be the record left.

Prelude of spring, 2021, Oil on canvas, 100x80 cm
This is a good dark, painting for our mini apocalypse. Spring of the Pandemic. Spring is coming everywhere but we are living in ruins, communicating by electrons rather than person to person whilst the jays scavenge from the wreckage. In the meantime climate change continues unabated. How will we rebuild? Will we get it right this time?
